Secret Service had to intervene after John Kelly tried to violently assault someone in the White House
Donald Trump has spent a lot of time this month falsely accusing Democratic and liberal political activists of being a violent mob. This has resulted in quite a bit of eye rolling, considering Trump’s own consistent history of explicitly calling for political violence, and his support for the violent racists in the Charlottesville rally and elsewhere. Now it turns out the “violent mob” is in the White House itself.
Donald Trump’s Chief of Staff John Kelly and Trump’s former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski got into such a heated argument in the Oval Office earlier this year, it ended up spilling out into the hallway and turned violent. Kelly grabbed Lewandowski by the collar and pushed him up against the wall, according to the New York Times, and Secret Service agents had to intervene in the fight. This perhaps shouldn’t be surprising, considering that both these men have a history of inappropriate aggression.
Just last week we learned that John Kelly had gotten into a shouting match with Trump’s National Security Adviser John Bolton, which was so out of control, it startled White House staffers. And of course during the campaign, Corey Lewandowski was arrested for allegedly assaulting a female reporter. Two things stand out here, and neither of them is good.
First, Donald Trump clearly likes to surround himself with violent people. Second, Trump hasn’t fired any of these people for any of these violent altercations. Even when he did later fire Lewandowski, it was for incompetence. Trump and John Kelly also went to great lengths to try to protect former White House staffer and alleged serial wife beater Rob Porter.
