Ohio Republicans tried to outlaw abortion statewide today, using plenty of electoral trickery along the way. But based on partial vote totals tonight, Decision Desk and Dave “I’ve seen enough” Wasserman are both saying that the measure will fail.

So what does this tell us? First, it’s obvious and immediate good news for women’s rights and abortion rights in Ohio. Second, in the big picture this points to the Democrats being in position to dominate in 2024 on a national level.

Think about it. If sixty-something percent of voters turned out today to vote in favor of abortion rights in a swing state, it tells us that voters in 2024 will indeed consider abortion rights to be a key motivating factor.

This means the Democrats will be in position to re-elect President Biden, win the House, and keep the Senate. From there we can move forward with Supreme Court expansion, particularly if we’re able to replace Kyrsten Sinema with Democrat Ruben Gallego, and then exempt Supreme Court confirmations from the filibuster.

This is also great news for Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown, who is up for reelection in 2024. He’s very popular in his state of Ohio, even though the state has been trending redder. It’ll be a close toss up race. If a vote for Sherrod Brown in 2024 is seen as a vote for abortion rights, it’ll be a big boost for his reelection prospects.

But for now this is simply a time to celebrate. It’s undeniably good news. And it’s proof that we can overcome even the ugliest of Republican election antics simply by helping to drive massive turnout. That means donating, volunteering, and phone banking for the most competitive of toss up races in 2024. Let’s go win this!
