Unity my ass
Republicans suddenly pretend to care about unity. Speaking of unity is like Republicans’ “thoughts and prayers;” they are full of it. Where was their love of unity while “president” Donald Trump was ripping this country apart? Where was the “unity” when many Republicans continued to spread lies about the election perpetrated by Donald Trump? Unity my ass. Jason Stanley, a philosophy professor, tweeted the meaning of unity in this context: “It was post-Civil War calls for unity that led to Jim Crow.” Republican calls for “unity” are similarly insincere.
Jim Jordan called the riot “a tragedy” but thinks that moving forward with a second impeachment will “further divide the country.” Jordan is always trying to find an out for Trump. Once Trump is impeached again, he can never run for political office again. Jordan wants to leave the door open for him; America does not. Besides, this country can hardly get any more divided than it already is, and the vast majority of those behaving like animals are the QAnon kooks. Their own families cannot deal with them. What makes Jordan think the rest of us even want to try? Keeping Trump out of politics will be the proverbial icing on the cake, as his post-presidency life promises to suck.
The PGA announced that they will not be holding the 2022 PGA Tour at Trump’s Bedminster course. Pro & College Sports reported that the vote came four days after “the Trump-fueled riot” at the Capitol. CEO Seth Wegman said that the “damage could have been irreparable” by continuing to associate with a pariah named Trump. In addition to the PGA, NBC News reported that R&A, which runs the British Open, had been considering Trump’s Turnberry resort in Scotland, but not anymore. Companies are running away from Trump so fast it could make your head spin. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio is reportedly looking into legal options for withdrawing from agreements with Trump’s properties according to NBC News. Shopify has pulled all Trump shops from its platform, and TikTok is removing any videos of Trump inciting the January 6 riot.
Trump’s poison is also bleeding into his current and former press staff, as Forbes published an editorial warning potential future employers of the hazards of hiring Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Kayleigh McEnany, Stephanie Grisham, Sean Spicer, or Kellyanne Conway. “Let it be known to the business world: Hire any of Trump’s fellow fabulists above, and Forbes will assume that everything your company or firm talks about is a lie. We’re going to scrutinize, double-check, investigate with the same skepticism we’d approach a Trump tweet. Want to ensure the world’s biggest business media brand approaches you as a potential funnel of disinformation? Then hire away.”
Finally, businesses seen as big donors to Republican candidates have vowed to stop funding all candidates who objected to certification of the election. Trump’s attempt to foil democracy will have long-lasting consequences, not just for him but for everyone who enabled him. Who said life is not at least somewhat fair?
