Turns out Donald Trump hasn’t actually withdrawn the U.S. from the World Health Organization
Donald Trump carried out his earlier threat today when he formally withdrew the United States from the World Health Organization. The means the U.S. is going is alone during a worsening pandemic, and cutting itself off from a planet’s worth of medical resources and knowledge. Or at least that’s what it would have meant, if Trump had actually withdrawn the U.S. from the WHO.
It turns out Trump submitted paperwork today that will withdraw the United States from the World Health Organization on July 6th, 2021 – a year from now. If Trump loses the election, Joe Biden will simply rip up this paperwork, and the United States won’t have actually withdrawn from the WHO.
In other words, this is merely yet another instance of Donald Trump pretending he’s done something. He’s stomping his feet about it and making a big show of something he didn’t even really do. He wants to be able to campaign on having left the WHO, without having to deal with the fallout of actually leaving the WHO. As Mary Trump just reminded us, Trump is a con artist through and through.
