Jeff Van Drew really screwed himself by deciding to vote against impeaching Donald Trump, and then by defecting from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party. Even as the fallout against him continues from his stunningly idiotic decision, it’s starting to look like Van Drew’s antics may have unwittingly helped the Democratic House impeachment effort.

Several of Van Drew’s staff have resigned since he announced he was switching parties, meaning he’s left with little political infrastructure at a time when he’s trying to figure out how to transition from one party to the other. He’s also decreased his own odds of retaining his seat in 2020, while increasing the odds that the Democrats will end up winning the seat in 2020. But he’s also handing the House Democrats something pretty nifty right now in 2019.

Over the past couple days, various House Democrats in swing districts have announced that they will indeed be voting in favor of the articles of impeachment against Donald Trump. Unless someone unexpectedly goes the other way, it appears that every House Democrat is going to vote for impeachment – except for Jeff Van Drew, who is no longer a Democrat.

In other words, thanks to Jeff Van Drew’s defection, the House Democrats may be able to argue that they unanimously voted to ratify the articles of impeachment against Donald Trump. That’s something they wouldn’t have been able to say if Van Drew were remaining a Democrat. We don’t know why this guy is self destructing like this, but he’s the gift that keeps on giving.
