Earlier this week, after UN Ambassador Nikki Haley resigned in the midst of a serious but under-reported ethics scandal, there was a sudden flurry of leaks about Donald Trump appointing Ivanka Trump to take the job. Palmer Report warned you that these leaks were clearly coming from Trump himself, and that it was aimed at distracting us from the midterms. Today he more or less proved us right.

This morning Donald Trump posted this tweet: “So nice, everyone wants Ivanka Trump to be the new United Nations Ambassador. She would be incredible, but I can already hear the chants of Nepotism! We have great people that want the job.” Sure enough, he’s all but admitting that he’s only been pushing this narrative in the hope of creating outrage. Why? It’s the wrong kind of outrage. After all, why bother to get out and campaign for Democrats in the midterms, if you can stay home and rant online about how awful it is that Trump might appoint his own daughter? At least that’s what Trump was hoping would happen.

Fortunately, most of the Resistance hasn’t taken the Ivanka Trump bait over the past week. It’s why Donald Trump is now resorting to directly trying to fan the flames on this. Walter Shaub, the former Director of the Office of Government Ethics, put it best in his response to Trump’s tweet: “Forget hearing the chants, I’d be willing to read the anti-nepotism statute to you. What’s your schedule look like today?”
