GOP Senator hints that Jeff Sessions is toast
All along, it’s been one of the most confusing and paradoxical aspects of an already confusing Trump-Russia scandal: Attorney General Jeff Sessions committed perjury more than a year ago, yet if Special Counsel Robert Mueller arrests him for it, it could set off a chain of events that could lead to Mueller’s firing. So when and how will Sessions face justice? One Republican Senator just seemed to hint that the answer is coming.
Let’s say Mueller indicts and arrests Sessions for perjury, along with all those treasonous Russia meetings he lied about. That would give Donald Trump the opportunity to appoint a new Attorney General, who could then seize authority over the Trump-Russia scandal from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. So even if you think Sessions is doing a horrible job as Attorney General, you have to temporarily root for him to remain in place for now.
There’s currently a battle within the Republican Party over prison reform. Sessions and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell are insisting on keeping long prison sentences for relatively minor crimes. Influential GOP Senator Chuck Grassley is pushing for reduced sentences. Even though Grassley is in the minority within his own party on this issue, he’s confident he can get his way. Moreover, he’s particularly confident that Sessions can’t stand in his way. Here’s what Grassley just told a group of assembled reporters: “We don’t have to worry about Senator Sessions. You don’t have to know why.” Wait, huh?
So Chuck Grassley knows something about Jeff Sessions that has him confident Sessions won’t be in position to do anything to block prison sentence reform. It’s worth pointing out that Grassley is the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is leading one of the investigations into the Trump-Russia scandal. What does Grassley know about Sessions that we don’t?
