Donald Trump’s Titanic
Every single day, Donald Trump and his incompetently illegitimate presidency find a new way to embarrass America. The only consolation is that there’s a political cost for Trump, and each time he screws up even worse, the odds of him finishing his term shrink even further. If his dozens of existing scandals weren’t bad enough, now he’s publicly siding with an alleged serial wife beater. It’s the kind of issue where he can only end up losing.
So why is Trump making a point of siding with this relatively unimportant White House aide, who has already resigned over the controversy? We all know why. Trump has admitted to being a serial sexual predator. More than twenty women have come forward to say that he sexually assaulted them. Trump has to side with his own outgoing staffer, or else he’d be siding against himself. This scandal might sink Trump’s Chief of Staff John Kelly, but Trump himself is taking on water.
Here’s how Congressman Ted Lieu put it after Trump made a point of saying how bad he felt for the alleged domestic abuser, while not saying a word about either of the victims involved: “Domestic violence is a serious issue & Chief of Staff John Kelly should resign for mishandling it. However, that won’t solve the problem. It’s like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. The problem is at the top.”
Lieu is right. Donald Trump’s presidency is the Titanic. It’s been sinking from day one. There’s no salvaging it, because it only exists as a result of the treason that Trump committed by conspiring with the Russians to rig the election. Even as the Feds continue to gradually prove Trump’s crimes, this particular scandal is a reminder that – treason aside – Trump is simply a flaming pile of crap in every sense of the metaphor.
