“Throwing it away” – Marjorie Taylor Greene waves the white flag
Now matter how badly and ineptly the Republicans blow it, there are always prominent voices on our side who will insist that it’s all part of some secret evil genius master plan. The Republicans must want this chaos, they’ll argue. The Republicans are loving this, they’ll insist.
But back in the real world it just doesn’t work that way. Most of these House Republicans are professional fraudsters who got to this level by knowing how to put on a calculated act aimed at pandering to right wing losers, in order to line their own pockets. These House Republican grifters know better than anyone that the grift only remains intact if they can keep their seats. And that means not doing the kinds of embarrassing things that can cost them the majority.
Marjorie Taylor Greene, for instance, is a highly calculated grifter who’s so skilled at portraying a crazy dummy that even a lot of folks on our side mistakenly think she’s a crazy dummy. But she comes from a far right rural anti-government extremist district, and she knows the character she needs to play in order to appeal to those types, and so that’s the character she plays.
But Greene showed who she really is – a calculated professional grifter – when she backed Kevin McCarthy for Speaker at the start of the year. She knew that was the Republicans’ only shot at retaining majority control over House committees and such. And every Republican grifter in Congress knows that the way you rake in the big right wing donations is to get on the relevant committee and then take your marching orders.
Now that House Republicans have gone weeks without a Speaker (and thus without a bankable agenda), Marjorie Taylor Greene is acknowledging that this is a losing situation for her and her fellow Republican grifters. Tonight she said that “Republican voters across America gave us this majority and we are throwing it away.”
And she’s right. This is how you fritter away a majority. If House Democrats had the majority and were behaving this stupidly, you’d say they were throwing away their opportunity to do some good for the country. As it is, House Republicans have the majority and are behaving this stupidly, and are thus throwing away their opportunity to keep the majority and keep on lining their pockets.
