This way madness lies

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

“That way, madness lies.” This means a proposed course of action is bound to lead to disaster. That’s exactly what I want to talk about in this article. This article isn’t about Republicans or Trumpers. It’s about our side.

And I want to make it clear — I do not refer to Palmer Report readers. I DO, however, refer to comments by Democrats I have seen on social media, and they’re worrying. Very worrying. Allow me to explain and give it more context. Abortion is obviously a powerful and motivating issue for many, including Democrats and Independents.

And an awful lot has been written and said about abortion and what the implications of the overturning of Roe will mean for the midterms. And now witness, if you will, this comment: “Every woman knows about Roe and the ones that don’t deserve what they get!”

Or this comment: “Women who are that stupid where they don’t follow what’s going in with the supreme court deserve to have their rights taken away.”

Madness. Both these comments are from people who identify as Democrats. I could list one hundred more. ” That way madness lies.”

This isn’t a way to embrace new voters and new ideas. There persists the belief among many that those who do not follow politics daily are stupid. I do not subscribe to that belief. This is a terrible outlook that could lose us some voters. The whole POINT of phone banking and sending postcards are to reach those voters who do not pay attention daily.

And yes, sorry to say there are even some people — good people but just uninformed — who don’t follow the Supreme Court and know very little about what’s going on with Roe. Those comments above — disturb me. There is self-righteousness in them that does not invite newcomers. It is a lopsided way of looking at elections.

It’s actually horrifying and not the way to motivate, grow our big tent and get others involved. Also, this comment: “There are no undecided voters.” (This isn’t from just one person but from countless.)

Boy, oh boy, are these people wrong. There ARE undecided voters. I’ve seen them online. We’ve spoken to them on the phone. They are out there. So please — if you know anyone with this outlook — try talking some sense into them. Because we don’t want madness going forward — we want to win.
