This sure blew up in “Speaker” Mike Johnson’s face
When “Speaker” of the House Mike Johnson released new security footage of January 6th, I wrote at the time that it was one of the dumbest moves I’d ever seen in politics. All it did was put January 6th back into the headlines – and if January 6th is the prevailing narrative, then the Republicans are automatically losing. Now it’s gotten even worse for Johnson.
It turns out Mike Johnson didn’t release much January 6th footage. But the little bit that he did release has merely allowed additional suspects to be belatedly identified and arrested. So what Mike Johnson has really done is to send a number of Trump supporters potentially to prison.
Some have theorized that Mike Johnson may have been forced to agree to release January 6th footage in order to secure the votes of certain extremist House Republicans to make him Speaker. But even if so, the whole thing is just an unbelievably dumb move. Releasing the footage didn’t help the Republicans, it hurt the Republicans – and everyone with their thinking cap on knew it was going to play out that way.
