From the minute Donald Trump announced Matt Gaetz as his nominee for Attorney General, I said that the nomination had a chance to fail. Trump could have slid almost anyone through as a recess appointment. But the keyword there was “almost.” Trump, thanks to delusional senility and a total lack of any adults around him, actually thought this Gaetz pick was going to magically work. It didn’t.

We’ll now be subjected to a thousand contrarian hot takes on TV and Twitter about how this was somehow always the plan, and that the failed Gaetz nomination somehow makes Trump even more dangerously powerful. But let’s be real. This failed nomination is a body blow for Trump. He picked an alleged underage sex trafficker for Attorney General, and he wasn’t powerful enough to make the nomination succeed. It makes Trump look slimy and inept in the eyes of the people in the middle who just elected him.

This failed Gaetz nomination was exactly what we needed to get the ball rolling on driving Trump’s approval rating way down before he even takes office. It’ll ensure that he enters office weak, rudderless, and devoid of political capital. It also proves that if we’re still willing to fight, we can still win some important battles and make a difference. Matt Gaetz could have been Attorney General of the United States. Now he’s unemployed.

So let’s take this win and celebrate it for how big it is. And let’s savor it for a moment, because at this point we could use some good news. Let’s also remember that we’ll have to keep fighting. Trump is weakened by this, but he’s still going to be dangerous, and he’s not going away. But let’s use this victory over Trump and Gaetz as a launching point for a new Resistance, and let’s keep fighting.
