This one’s coming at us fast
As we come to the end of 2024, we have our first elections of 2025 coming up in just a week. You read that right. Democrats have largely been doing well in special elections for the better part of a decade – the ones that matter when it comes to legislation that affects us most directly – and now there are three legislative special elections scheduled for Tues, Jan 7 in Virginia, a state that will also have a gubernatorial election in November at the top of the ticket.
State senate elections in districts SD-10 and SD-32 as well as a House of Delegates election in HD-26. Since Democrats have a one-member majority in both chambers, these elections clearly impact the balance of power – and could be the first indicator of how motivated they are in the pivotal November general elections.
Virginia also has a Republican governor who is a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, which makes these elections particularly pivotal when it comes to stopping the worst of the GOP’s agenda at the state level. When Donald Trump takes office, he’ll be starting his term with significantly fewer Republican-dominated state trifectas or even statehouses than what he had to deal with in 2017, which will go a long way to putting the brakes on what his administration has to offer. Let’s get more Democrats elected as we kick off 2025 and keep Project 2025 in the past.
