If you’ve ever spent time around someone as they’ve gone through the stages of dementia, you know that there’s often a point where they decide everyone else is stupid and everyone else is the enemy. Whoever is in the room is at fault for whatever confusion the dementia patient is suffering from at any given moment. It’s disturbing and it’s jarring, and it’s difficult to go through for both patient and loved one – and that’s when the patient was sane to begin with.

Then there’s Donald Trump, who has always been one of the most psychologically unhinged people on the planet, and is now suffering from worsening dementia symptoms on top of it. Trump no longer seems to know who people are or what’s going on. But the one thing he’s certain about is that whoever he’s with at any given moment, they’re to blame and must be attacked.

It’s the most straightforward explanation for Trump’s behavior over the past several days. He gave a speech to a group in Detroit, while standing in front of a podium that said “Detroit” on it, and spent the speech attacking Detroit. Then he gave a speech in Reno and questioned whether the people of Reno have any values. Then he gave a speech in the California desert and threatened to let the place burn to the ground.

No matter who Trump is addressing, he attacks them. It doesn’t seem to matter who they are. It doesn’t matter if it’s in a swing state like Nevada or Michigan, or a blue state like California. It doesn’t matter if it’s in a city where he’s not going to get any votes anyway like Detroit, or if it’s in a place like Reno where there are a lot of votes up for grabs. It’s not about politics or strategy. It’s about a dementia riddled man angrily lashing out at whoever he’s addressing, because dementia patients often tend to do that – especially when they’re not on the meds that they need to be on.

It’s dicey speculating about what dementia medications Trump might be on, or what dementia medications he’s not on that he should be on. But it’s fair game because Trump is refusing to release his medical records. Is he taking Aricept for cognitive issues? Is he taking anxiety drugs for dementia-related agitation? Is he taking anti psychotic drugs for dementia-related misbehavior? These are questions he should be answering by releasing his medical records, so we don’t have to ask.

This is serious, serious stuff. Yet the media still doesn’t want to touch it. When a presidential nominee is exhibiting behavior consistent with advanced dementia three weeks before an election and is refusing to release his medical records, that’s the story. Yet the media is instead flooding us with contrarian hot takes about how Trump’s dementia symptoms are instead some kind of secret political strategy. The media’s cowardly behavior with regard to Trump’s dementia symptoms is as absurd as Trump’s dementia-related behavior. Trump is only going to get worse. Is the media ever going to get better?
