This just keeps getting easier for Jack Smith
Putting together a successful federal criminal prosecution that can result in a conviction at trial is not an easy or simple task, even when the person is obviously guilty in the court of public opinion. But Jack Smith and the DOJ have indeed put together a comprehensive rock solid case against Donald Trump, and the prospect of convicting him keeps getting easier.
Now that Donald Trump has seen the trial witness list in his Espionage Act case, he knows what he’s up against. He knows what those witnesses have on him. And it turns out he’s doubling down on the same old defense strategy: confessing. Trump is being even more direct than ever, stating in his latest speech that he had an “absolute right” to take the documents. Well okay then. That’s like trying to skate on bank robbing charges by insisting that you had an “absolute right” to take the money. It’s also known as having no defense at all, and helping the prosecution make its case, in the same breath.
Jack Smith is also doing his own part to make his life easier. He’s cut limited immunity deals with multiple people in the fake elector scheme, and gotten them to testify at the last minute in order to boost his 2020 election related case against Donald Trump and other big fish. But there’s an old adage about how no amount of investigative work can get you quite as far as criminals simply being stupid, and Trump is now at his most stupid point yet. Bring on the conviction.
