This is just sad
The question was how Americans should feel about Donald Trump’s coronavirus lies getting so many Americans killed. He didn’t have an answer, of course. He couldn’t accept the ugly reality inherent in the question, which is that his already-weak popularity is falling further. So he simply reverted to what he most wishes were true: “A lot of people love Trump.”
Donald Trump’s press briefings are nothing more than a half-senile old crime boss delusionally trying to convince himself that it’s not all slipping away from him. Trump is facing the prospect of losing the election, going to prison, seeing his name taken off every last building, and lasting just long enough in solitary confinement to see his kids get arrested for their related crimes. In his more lucid moments, he knows what’s coming. He’s desperate to avoid having to admit it to himself.
These press briefings are an anticlimactic ending to a movie that no one wanted to be watching to begin with. There’s a reason older mobsters so often end up in prison. They’ve spent their entire lives trying to stay a step ahead of their own bullshit, and once they finally lose a step, it all catches up to them. Donald Trump was never a particularly interesting character. Now he’s just pathetic.
