In the wake of the Buffalo mass shooting (and other shootings) this week, Texas Governor Greg Abbott is receiving a lot of negative press. The reason for this is because of Abbott’s rhetoric. Abbott has repeatedly referred to immigrants in demeaning and despicable terms.

One of those terms is using the word “invaders” to describe them. Abbott’s hate speech has become worse and worse, and now — finally — many are suggesting the non-Governor tone it down a bit.

Abbott’s disgusting actions have not been confined to words. He has also wasted much time at the border, using it for photo opportunities in attempts to gin up his poll numbers. Abbott’s latest sickening move has been to call for the denial of educational services to immigrant children.

Abbott is essentially a racist who will not ADMIT to being one. However, one does not have to look too closely to see the rampant racism and cruelty surrounding this man. Domingo Garcia is the president of the League of United Latin American Citizens. He had something to say about Abbott.

“Gov. Abbott and the right-wing talk show hosts bear responsibility for their rhetoric of hate that produces killers.”

“They need to tone that down to stop with the race-baiting and scapegoating of others to get political points and divide Americans.”

Nicely said. But I hold out little hope that Abbott and his ilk will stop. There is so much to love about Texas. The Lone Star state is beautiful and offers much. It is a wild melting pot of culture, history, great food, and amazing sights.

But this melting pot is in danger of boiling over because it is in the hands of a mad scientist named Greg Abbott, who appears not to give a damn about it. But he also seems to be trying to tamp down some of the things that make the state so unique.

Abbott appears smug and self-satisfied. Beating him will be challenging, but it is a must-do because the bottom line is if we don’t? We will be looking at a very different Texas than what we know now. And it could soon be an unrecognizable Texas. We cannot let that happen.
