This is how it’s done

On Tuesday night, a number of important senatorial debates took place in pivotal states that Democrats need to keep the Senate. Among them, is Michigan, where Democrats have a solid candidate in Rep. Elissa Slotkin who debated her Republican opponent Mike Rogers – a guy who likes Donald Trump and also doesn’t seem to be registered to vote in the same vote he’s running for office, which has essentially become a pattern with Republican senatorial candidates.

Elissa Slotkin, however, gave a master class in her debate, as she highlighted the winning issue of reproductive freedom and saying her opponent has reduced the issue to a talking point – that his track record shows his long history of voting for every ban and every restriction that came to his desk in 20 years as a legislator – nor does he stop there. When it comes to raising the retirement age, cuts to Social Security, or negotiating drug prices, Rogers voted against Michiganders – “Maybe he forgot that when he was down in Florida,” she said as she finished her speech, clearly tying him to Rick Scott, the Florida senator and Medicare fraudster who is one of the loudest Republicans about gutting Social Security, who is also vying for a Senate leadership position should he win in November.

It was a powerful moment when she painted a clear contrast between herself and the longtime career politician – emphasizing what we all need to do when it comes to Republican politicians: Don’t look at them by what they say or do – but how they actually end up voting. That’s the way to cut through every ad you’ll see on TV from now until the election and the same goes for every debate. This is why we need to elect Elissa Slotkin on Nov 5 and give Kamala Harris a Democratic trifecta to govern.
