This is getting worse for Matt Gaetz
I’ve known guys like Matt Gaetz before. They’re living, talking frat memes. Matt Gaetz, however, is a bridge to far. He was investigated for sleeping with underage girls. That is pretty awful; one would imagine the GOP knows it.
That might be why there is so much leaking about the viability of his confirmation as Attorney General. Word is leaked daily now that his confirmation will not go well, that many are set to vote against him, and that he and the AG chair will, in fact, never meet.
Gaetz’s nomination for Attorney General in the first place is an abomination. It is part of Donald Trump’s awful decision-making. Let’s discuss Gaetz in detail. The man has not been charged. But, he HAS been investigated, and the crimes he has been investigated FOR are repugnant.
Think about Gaetz as AG. Think about his utterly awful decision-making. I doubt he’d last a week. I also think there would, in fact, be mass resignations. Gaetz is like a computer virus; you try to scrub it clean, you use every safeguard at your disposal, and just when you think it’s gone, it comes back ferociously to try to screw things up yet again.
That’s how computer viruses work, but the good news is that they can usually be put to bed. And so can this nomination. It’s very simple, really.
The ethics report will be released. It might be leaked to the NY Times, which is usually the way these things go, or to someone else. But make no mistake: The ethics report WILL become part of the dialogue, and I have a feeling what’s IN the report is going to be horrible.
Also, think about the fact that Republicans rarely stand up to Donald trump. yet here they are, repudiating Gaetz. Why is that? It’s because this confirmation is so bad, so utterly awful, that even REPUBLICANS are recoiling in utter horror. Think about what that means.
None of this is good news for Gaetz. He is currently perhaps the most hated man in Congress, though he just quit. There is also talk that Gaetz is prepping himself to be nicer to the ones who will decide his fate, making niceties to them. This is hilarious and will not work.
The Senate is where many a Brutus goes to hover. They move silently in hallways, political swords in hand, and they have no qualms about betrayal. There are MANY, even some Gaetz considers friends, who could vote against him and not lose a moment’s sleep over it.
This is, as you know, how politics sometimes work. Betrayal and backstabbing go hand in hand with shitty political nominations. Political Brutus’s go hand in hand with “I vote no.” And Matt Gaetz goes hand in hand with reaping karma’s vengeance as all the Brutas’s wait in excitement to tear his nomination to shreds.
