This is a trend not a bounce
Presidential candidate Kamala Harris has made her choice. The interesting thing about her choice is that, unlike Shapiro and Kelly, Walz is from a state that Democrats normally win. He does, however, answer many of the desires of progressives. The other good news-at least for Chuck Schumer-is that none of his senators were chosen, and according to Axios, he believes having Walz on the ticket will boost senate candidates’ chances in the Midwest. Giving a first look at Walz, he looks like someone’s benevolent dad, but don’t sell him short. He’s the one who came up with the “weird” slogan that Democrats are rattling Donald Trump with. Trump has already begun bashing Walz, not that anyone is surprised.
Trump’s most recent donation solicitation alleges that Tim Walz will “unleash hell on Earth.” It’s all crap. His main complaint is that Walz passed a bill to allow former convicted felons to vote. Hello? Trump is a felon too-34 times. But none of it matters. Trump is going down. He knows it, and he doesn’t like it. Besides, Walz’s “weird” comment is running rampant through the media. The Independent had an entire article addressing Trump and Vance’s weirdness and why Trump and his supporters are so bothered. Who cares? All that anger has pressed the media to look at even more, like Trump’s age and mental health. To make matters worse for Trump, he is losing to Kamala Harris in virtually every poll. Even Nate Silver believes she’s going to win. Tribune News Service claims that Trump and his team cried “foul” over a Sunday poll, but it just got worse from there. Trump can continue to lean into his claims that this is a “honeymoon period” for Harris, but others disagree.
The Intelligencer opines that Harris’ gains are “a trend, not just a bounce.” While the author does believe Harris got a quick bounce because of the 20-year age difference between her and Trump, the numbers show it’s more than that. According to this piece, FiveThirtyEight is showing Harris leading Trump by 1.7%. Before her entrance into the race, Biden was trailing by 3.2. She has not only made up the deficit but has now surpassed Trump. He goes through various polls that had Trump leading by as much as 5%, but that’s all gone now. They also state that in the swing states, Harris has bridged the gap with the most stunning numbers coming from Georgia where she has increased the number to the point of leaving Harris and Trump in a tie. She now leads Trump in Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin, and Michigan (with a whopping 11% advantage). They point to evidence that Harris is doing very well among young, Black, and Latino voters. This momentum will easily carry Harris to the convention later this month and beyond. As D. Earl Stephens said in his opinion piece for Alternet: “This is no damned honeymoon. This is called commitment to a cause. This is what patriotism looks like.” This is really happening, folks. We are about to make history again. Harris and Walz are ready to usher us into the future.
