This is a dumpster fire

It’s the nightmare scenario. Donald Trump now has control of the presidency, the House, and the Senate. He has, in theory, a blank check. Nothing is supposed to work that way, given that he only won the popular vote by about 1%, and he only won the deciding swing state by about 1%. But here we are, with Trump off to the races again, except this time he’s tripping over himself in almost cartoonish fashion – and thank goodness for small favors.

Trump had a free pass to nominate anyone he wanted for his cabinet, so long as it wasn’t going to cause any headaches for Senate Republicans. All he had to do was pick low profile henchmen. So instead Trump picked an alleged sex trafficker, an alleged rapist, an alleged Russian asset, and a mentally unstable Kennedy.

Trump’s Gaetz pick has already been withdrawn amid scandal. There are serious questions about whether the Hegseth and Gabbard picks will survive. And the Senate hasn’t even gotten around to considering the RFK Jr pick, presumably because they’re too busy rolling their eyes.

This is a special kind of stupid on Trump’s part. He had a golden opportunity to get the Republican Senate to roll over for him. All he had to do was not pick these people. And he blew it. Now Trump looks like an idiot, he’s set to enter office with a low approval rating, the Republican Senators who hate him the most now feel emboldened, and Trump is already stuck playing defense. Remember two weeks ago when he was in the driver’s seat?

One can only hope that Trump keeps screwing up. Given that he’s basically disappeared from public view and from social media, you have to wonder if his physical and/or cognitive health has taken a bad turn, or if Trump’s babysitters have him sedated somewhere for fear he’ll speak up and make things even worse. Either way, Trump’s babysitters are also inept idiots, as they feud with each other and leak to the media about supposed physical confrontations between top Trump advisers and such.

Our worst case scenario is if Trump and his people end up being surprisingly competent, because then they’ll end up being able to do every corrupt and extremist thing they want to do. Our best hope of finding angles for fighting back against Donald Trump is if he and his people end up being a total dumpster fire. Fortunately, so far this is indeed a total dumpster fire. Let’s do what we can to keep it that way.
