This is a body blow for Trump
Over these past two very dark weeks I’ve said that the best thing we have going for us is that Donald Trump is senile to the point of total incompetence and the people around him aren’t any better at politics. Sure enough that came home to roost when Trump and his babysitters naively tried to nominate Matt Gaetz for Attorney General and seemed to think they could actually sneak it through. They thought wrong.
Trump’s highest profile cabinet nomination has already been forced to withdraw amid ugly scandal. Trump has the Senate, the House, and the supposed “mandate” of a slight popular vote majority, and yet he’s so bad at this, he still managed to fail in humiliating fashion right out of the gate.
This is a body blow for Trump. It makes him look like an inept clown in the eyes of the people in the middle who just voted for him. They were looking for cheaper eggs, and instead they got a President-elect who tried and failed to put an alleged underage sex trafficker in charge of the Department of Justice.
Trump is going to win some battles as we go. That’s just an unfortunate reality. But he didn’t win this one. Instead he handled it so ineptly that he ended up weakening himself. And he might not win the next battle either, if we remember that we can still fight and win.
