The GOP ran on affordability in 2024 and for some time, due largely to their tendency for inheriting stable economies that the Democrats repaired, there’s a longstanding myth about Republicans being good for the economy, which couldn’t be further from the truth.

The problem is that Republican policies are already contributing to the rise of costs and consumers are beginning to notice. It’s bad enough that Donald Trump is already distancing himself from rhetoric, as his supporters will largely not notice and no longer care about the cost of groceries that they supposedly couldn’t afford back in October.

Mike Johnson, however, is a different story. Unlike Donald Trump, he’s not very well-liked within his own party, much less in Congress. The voters who actually know who he is – outside of his own district – like him even less than that. Therefore, it’s a liability when he says on the record that he has no idea how implementing tariffs is going to affect prices.

As 2026 approaches, we’ve got the strategy that will let us take the exact same issue Republicans were promising to fix, and actually work to make life affordable for the people who will suffer under the recklessness of the Trump administration. We don’t even have to wait until 2026, as Johnson’s message helps us out in any local elections for 2025. The message is clear: Republicans can’t govern and they couldn’t help you even if they actually wanted to.
