Donald Trump’s approval rating and election poll numbers have always been poor, but recently they’ve gotten even worse. As the nation has been engulfed in protests demanding racial equality and police reform, Trump has put forth an absurdly aggressive and tone-deaf response that has turned off a whole lot of people.

Right now we’re seeing everyone from corporations, to the NFL, to even NASCAR, get on board with the theme of racial equity. Donald Trump doesn’t believe in any such thing, but he could easily have faked it, and probably boosted his approval rating a bit in the process. It would have been a layup for him. So why is Trump bungling this so badly?

It turns out Trump really is clueless about how anything works. NBC News is revealing tonight that Trump keeps writing off the widespread protests during staff meetings, because “These aren’t my voters.” It’s incredibly cynical and craven to write off millions of Americans simply because they’re not likely to vote for you anyway. In this instance it’s also incredibly stupid from a strategic standpoint.

Voters in the middle are heavily leaning toward supporting racial equality right now. Donald Trump’s decision to completely write off the movement, and to accuse the protesters of being thugs and domestic terrorists, only serves to turn off the people in the middle.

Sure, Trump is worried about keeping his racist base happy. But as the poll numbers keep showing, his base alone is nowhere near being large enough to get him reelected. He needs the people in the middle – and yet he doesn’t appear to even understand that they exist.
