There are more important things…
I was watching television with family on Sunday afternoon when I, like you, got the news that President Jimmy Carter had passed away. It was news that we all knew was coming before too much longer. But it still somehow felt like the end of an era. Carter was President when I was born, and I’m not exactly young. He was a holdover from another era, when a politician could be that wholesome and still get elected President. One would like to think that such a thing is still somehow possible. It’s a reminder that we truly have no idea what 2028 might look like.
I could go on all day saying great things about Jimmy Carter, and I often wonder what America might have looked like if he hadn’t been robbed of his rightful second term. But, as with more recent stolen elections, there’s nothing we can do to change it now. All we can do is focus on fighting the fight that’s in front of us, winning (or surviving) as many political battles as possible, and trying to come out of the darkest times with as much of our national soul intact as possible.
So let’s give a toast to Jimmy Carter, and then let’s get back to work. President Carter himself was focused on trying to fight and win political battles all the way up to the end. He specifically said he intended to stay alive long enough to vote in 2024, which he did. It turns out that final battle didn’t go our way. We owe it to President Carter to keep fighting and make sure that the next election goes the way it should.
