The thing everyone is missing about this new Jenna Ellis / Sidney Powell / Dan Scavino / Donald Trump leak
The media has obtained the proffer interviews that Jenna Ellis and Sidney Powell did with Fulton County DA Fani Willis, and it’s set off a firestorm. People are abuzz about who leaked the footage (doesn’t ultimately matter), whether the leak will help Donald Trump (it won’t), and the fact that Trump’s spokesman Dan Scavino told Trump’s people that Trump planned to remain in office whether he won or lost. That last part is the big story here, but not for the reasons that most people are talking about.
The popular narrative tonight is that if Trump told his own people that he was going to stay in office whether he won or lost, then he really is dangerously powerful. He really is an authoritarian. And we’d better make sure we cower over just how dangerously powerful he is. But that’s all nonsense – and this leak proves it.
Trump told his own people that he was going to stay in office no matter what, and yet he didn’t manage to stay in office. He had to leave. He’s now a couch potato in Florida, awaiting four criminal trials. If Trump had the kind of magical powers that people on both sides keep insisting he has, he would have been able to remain in office. But he couldn’t pull it off.
This new leak, more than anything else we’ve seen, proves that Donald Trump does not have magical powers. He broke every law he could think of in the name of trying to remain in office, but it didn’t work. Trump did a ton of damage. Of that there is no doubt. But of all the things he vowed to do, he was unable to make most of them happen. He talks a big game, but he’s a weakling. He’s powerless. He’s a joke. He’s the opposite of how he’d like people to see him. That, more than anything else, is what we should be emphasizing about him.
