You’ve probably read the news about Vice President Kamala Harris’s record-breaking fundraising efforts since President Joe Biden passed the torch. But there’s another broken record that hasn’t gotten as much press: the surge in voter registrations within just 48 hours, indicating a healthier democracy and an energized electorate.

While the fundraising numbers are monumental, the Harris campaign’s ability to attract new voter registrations is exciting and a sign of serious momentum as we head toward Election Day. As Vote.org reported, nearly 40,000 new voters registered in the first 48 hours following Biden’s endorsement of Harris. This figure reflects a daily increase of nearly 700% and over 80% younger voters, according to posts by CEO Andrea Hailey.

The spike is evidence that more Americans want to play a role in shaping America’s future and understand how much is at stake in the upcoming election. Combined with the Harris campaign’s eye-popping $81 million haul within the first 24 hours, the highest in U.S. campaign fundraising history, these records are just the start. The nightmare situation where Democrats lose because too many people believe their vote doesn’t make a difference or just aren’t motivated to turn out is quickly becoming less of a concern.

Addressing the crowd at Zeta Phi Beta sorority’s biennial convention in Indianapolis on Wednesday, Harris summed up the energy perfectly. “When we organize, mountains move; when we mobilize, nations change; and when we vote, we make history.” Harris’s soaring words are a reminder that our democracy is up to us, and November 5 is the day we can all ensure a healthy future for the nation while making history.
