This week we all got a good laugh when the Joe Biden 2020 campaign acquired the rights to the keepamericagreat.com website domain name, and used it to troll Donald Trump over his “Keep America Great” campaign slogan. But there’s more to this kind of story than what’s being reported – and it reveals something about what’s going on within Trump’s orbit.

For starters, a simple WHOIS lookup reveals that the keepamericagreat.com domain was registered in mid-2015 by an anonymous individual. This may or may not have had something to do with the fact that the phrase “Keep America Great” was used as part of the marketing for a movie called “The Purge: Election Year” – which was in production around that same time. It wasn’t until 2017 that Donald Trump revealed he was going to use the phrase “Keep America Great” as his reelection slogan.

Three years later, Joe Biden and his campaign have acquired the keepamericagreat.com domain name, presumably by purchasing it from the original registrar. This suggests that the domain was available for sale all along. So why didn’t Donald Trump simply buy it back in 2017, so he could use it as part of his campaign effort?

There are two plausible explanations. One is that the original registrar simply refused to sell the domain to Donald Trump on ethical grounds, and ended up selling it to Joe Biden instead. The other explanation is that the domain was available for sale all along, and Trump was simply too cheap to pay the price that the seller wanted. Either way, Trump got played for a fool – because he is a fool.
