The real reason Donald Trump may be trying to make sure the Republicans lose the Georgia runoffs

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Donald Trump is still trying to convince anyone who will listen that he somehow secretly won the 2020 presidential election, and that the whole thing was rigged against him. It allows him to continue fundraising and pocketing the money. It also allows him to avoid having to admit to himself that he’s just that unpopular. This creates something of an odd situation for him in the Georgia runoffs.

Let’s say the Republicans win the Senate runoffs in January. It’ll mean that the Republicans were able to win Georgia without Trump’s name on the ballot, after having just lost Georgia with Trump’s name on the ballot in November. It’ll prove that the only difference was Trump and his toxic unpopularity.

In such case Trump will try to shift his conspiracy theory such that only he was targeted by election fraud, and for some reason the Democrats allowed the Republicans to win the Senate runoffs instead of rigging that too. But at that point Trump’s conspiracy logic will be so twisted in a knot, even he may have trouble clinging to it.

In Donald Trump’s mind, the best thing that could happen for him is if the Republicans lose the Georgia Senate runoffs. Then he can insist that it was somehow rigged, just as the November election was somehow rigged. It’ll help keep Trump’s conspiracy theory alive, at least in his own deranged mind.

It may explain why Trump is doing the absolute bare minimum to help with the Georgia runoffs, and why so many of Trump’s prominent allies are now flat out telling Republican voters to stay home instead of voting in the runoffs. Trump is going down either way. But if the Republicans lose the runoffs, he’ll be in a better position to reassure himself that he secretly won, even as he’s being hauled off to prison. Feel free to help make that a reality by donating to Democratic candidates Warnock and Ossoff here.
