On Sunday, Donald Trump announced that he’s heading to Scotland and Ireland to conduct business related to his golf courses. This immediately set off all kinds of speculation about why he might really be taking such a trip at this particular time.

I can tell you why he’s taking this trip. He’s doing it specifically to set off all kinds of speculation about why he might really be taking such a trip at this particular time. He wants the media and the public obsessing over this trip, whether he might be fleeing the country (spoiler alert: he’s not), and whether the trip might somehow magically delay his next indictment (spoiler alert: it won’t).

Trump wants this kind of nonsensical speculation to be the big headline about him this week, in order to drown out any headlines about how a civil jury might conclude that he raped a woman, or how he’s about to be indicted under the Espionage Act.

Donald Trump is still trying to handle all of this like a reality show. He doesn’t like the storyline, so he’s trying to create a distraction. He doesn’t want people talking about one thing, so he’s giving them something else to talk about. When you give in to that by breathlessly hyping his overseas trip and spinning conspiracy theories about why he’s taking it, you’re only helping him. The best way to stick it to Trump is to not care about his overseas trip at all, since it’s a non-story, and instead keep your focus on Trump’s worsening legal situation. Trump clearly doesn’t want us focusing on his legal situation at all, which means it should be our main focus.
