Donald Trump has spent months refusing to invoke the Defense Production Act when it comes to masks, ventilators, testing kits, and other crucial coronavirus supplies. Why? He and his goons have been running a series of schemes where they confiscate equipment from the states and then sell it back to them, and that scheme only works when there’s a scarcity of product to begin with.

Now, today, Donald Trump is suddenly invoking the Defense Production Act in order to force meat processing plants to remain open, even as the coronavirus continues to spread among plant workers. Everyone is asking why. But in situations like this, there are only ever two explanations.

The first is that one of Trump’s cronies or donors runs a meat processing plant and asked Trump to do this, so the plant would have an excuse to remain open and keep making money. The second is that Trump eats hamburgers constantly (according to a recent New York Times article), and he’s afraid that he’ll no longer be able to get his hands on hamburgers.

If this sounds absurd to you, consider just how absurd of a person Donald Trump is overall. He spent the weekend ranting about “Noble Prizes” and – yes – hamburgers. He thinks you can drink Lysol and inject yourself with sunlight. So yeah, he’s the kind of idiot who would invoke the Defense Production Act for meat processing plants just so he can keep getting his hamburgers. But the odds are there’s a personal profit motive in place as well. With this guy and his corrupt cronies, there usually is.
