The real danger with Donald Trump at this point

Donald Trump spent Christmas weekend announcing that he was “clairvoyant” and declaring that the “USA is dying.” It spawned a thousand jokes: if he’s so clairvoyant, why didn’t he see his own 2020 loss coming? And of course when he declares that America is finished, what he really means is that he’s finished.

But there is a danger when it comes to Trump, and it comes down to what we’re not focusing on when we are focusing on Trump. For instance Texas Governor Greg Abbott spent Christmas dumping a bunch of immigrants on VP Kamala Harris’ lawn, a stunt made particularly cruel by the freezing weather. Is it being talked about enough? Probably not.

Then there’s the fact that House Republican candidate George Santos managed to spend the entire election cycle running in a competitive race, without the media bothering to vet his apparently fictional existence on any level. But media spent the midterms chasing ratings by obsessing over an imaginary Trump 2024 comeback, so of course it missed the Santos scandal.

Donald Trump is about to be indicted, arrested, and put on criminal trial. This will finish off what little was left of his political viability – but it’ll put him even more firmly back into the headlines. And that’s the real danger with Trump these days: what we’re not talking about whenever we’re talking about him. After all, Trump is still sucking up much of the oxygen in the room, even if he is choking on it.
