The next House Republican to go

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Now that House Republican George Santos has been expelled, who’s going to be the next to go? There have been media reports that House Republicans might be looking to expel Matt Gaetz. And there are a number of House Republicans who have recently announced that they’re quitting at the end of the current term. But now another name is in the mix for the next to go.

Eric Swalwell tweeted this over the weekend: “With Santos gone, you’re hearing it here first: the next GOP member to leave Congress will be [Kevin McCarthy]. No way he stays. A guy who kidney punches his colleagues from behind is too afraid to serve out a full term with them. I bet he’s gone by end of year. What say you?”

Here’s why I find this interesting. Right around the time McCarthy was being ousted as Speaker, a major news outlet ran an article saying that McCarthy was considering resigning. At the time I pointed out that this could have been a matter of McCarthy himself putting the leak out there, as a way of letting lobbying firms and such know that he was interested in any lucrative offers they might want to make.

And now Swalwell seems to think that McCarthy is indeed likely to pack it up and head home well before the end of the current term. When there’s this much buzz about someone resigning, that buzz often ends up being based in reality. So I guess we won’t be shocked if Kevin McCarthy is the next House Republican to go. At this point the question might be how many of them are left by the end of the term.
