The Matt Gaetz scandal just got even uglier
When the news broke last night that Matt Gaetz was under federal criminal investigation for allegedly having sex with an underage girl, and he denied it while insisting he was instead being extorted over it, we predicted that whatever the truth was, it would begin coming out rather quickly. Sure enough, that’s already happening.
Multiple major news outlets have confirmed today that there is indeed a federal criminal probe into whether Matt Gaetz had sex with an underage girl, and that there is also a separate federal criminal probe into whether a former DOJ official attempted to extort Gaetz over it.
But now ABC News is reporting that the DOJ is probing Matt Gaetz’s alleged activities in multiple states, and investigating whether he had a “sexual relationship with at least one minor.” In other words, this now sounds like it may be about multiple underage girls in multiple states.
One of the oddest parts of this story is that the investigation into Matt Gaetz began when the Feds probed his close associate Joel Greenberg, who has already been charged with a variety of fraud charges and sex trafficking charges. This evening, the Feds hit Greenberg with additional fraud charges, meaning they’re truly putting the screws to this guy.
There’s already more than enough evidence to send Joel Greenberg to prison for decades, so why are the Feds suddenly ramping up the case against him? It feels like they’re trying to pressure him into flipping on bigger fish. Is that bigger fish Matt Gaetz? This just keeps getting uglier for Gaetz. He’s still denying any criminal wrongdoing. Whatever the truth is, we expect it will keep coming out rather quickly.
