From the start it’s been clear that the January 6th Committee is going to follow all of the evidence and establish Donald Trump’s level of culpability in the Capitol attack. But now the committee is making clear that it’s looking to establish that Trump had a much broader level of criminal culpability.

Over the past week we’ve seen a series of escalating headlines about how Trump conspired with former DOJ official Jeffrey Clark to try to forcibly overthrow the results of the 2020 election. This was never going to work, but it was nonetheless a criminal conspiracy to commit felony election tampering. Now the January 6th Committee says it’s expanding its probe to include the Trump-DOJ election tampering.

Earlier this week Palmer Report suggested that, based on how former DOJ officials Jeffrey Rosen and Richard Donoghue were being portrayed in recent reporting, they appeared to be wiling to cooperate as witnesses against Trump and Clark. Sure enough, it now turns out the January 6th Committee will be interviewing Rosen and Donoghue.

This means that the committee intends to establish the Trump DOJ election meddling and the January 6th insurrection as part of the same ongoing criminal effort on Donald Trump’s part to overthrow the 2020 election results. That’s a big deal, because establishing intent matters – both in the eyes of the court of public opinion, and when the committee inevitably refers its findings to the Department of Justice and seeks criminal prosecution against Trump.
