The House Republican clown car is crashing and burning tonight
Based on how bizarrely some House Republicans were behaving last week, I joked that they seemed like they were headed for witness protection. I was obviously being sarcastic. No House Republican (other than maybe George Santos) is going to change their name in an effort to take the heat off themselves, right? Right?
Well, now House Republican Don Bacon has announced that he’ll be voting against Jim Jordan in Tuesday’s full House vote for Speaker. Okay, that’s good. But Bacon is also telling the media that he wishes his name were Don Zacon instead of Don Bacon, so that he’d be further down in the alphabet, and thus he wouldn’t have to be the first person to vote against Jordan. No really, he said this.
So now we’re at a point where House Republicans are indeed talking openly about changing their names in an effort to take the heat off themselves. What was pure parody 48 hours ago is now what House Republicans are actually talking about. Of course Don Bacon is just joking. Wait, he is joking, right?
The kicker is that Don Bacon – or is it Don Zacon – isn’t even supposed to be one of the crazy ones. He represents a moderate district in Nebraska, and his 2024 reelection bid is rated a competitive “Lean Republican.” Come to think of it, no wonder he’s talking about disappearing. For the record, Bacon’s 2024 Democratic challenger is a great guy named Tony Vargas. Now is a good time to get behind him.
