The ground is shifting beneath us
Things are happening fast right now – or at least Trump and his babysitters are trying to make them happen fast. This week we’ve seen a rash of controversial, insane, unconfirmable high profile cabinet nominees. Team Trump is hoping the Republican Senate will sit back and let them be confirmed in recess. That’s not going well so far with the Matt Gaetz pick, which raises questions about just how politically naive Trump and his babysitters are. They really thought they could slip Gaetz in and no one would notice? Our side is currently wounded, but we’re not in a coma.
Still, even as Trump and his people stumble out of the gate, the ground is shifting beneath us. Gaetz has already resigned from the House. There will be a special election to replace him. And no, we won’t come within twenty points of competing in that far right district, no matter how loudly the Democratic candidate running in that special election insists that it’s winnable.
Then there’s Marco Rubio, who has the intellect and disposition of a fourth grader. He’s all but definitely going to be confirmed as Secretary of State. That means he’ll resign from the Senate. Not that Rubio ever lifted a finger in the Senate to begin with. And no, Rubio’s seat isn’t up for grabs either. It takes a special kind of stupid for an incoming President to make appointments that open up competitive seats, and unfortunately for us, Trump and his babysitters haven’t made this particular mistake (yet).
The ground is now shifting in other ways. Ever since Twitter was bought by a loon, there have been multiple attempts to mass migrate to a new competing platform. Those efforts have all failed, and everyone has ended up back on Twitter. But in the wake of the 2024 election fallout, this time the mass migration attempt may be the real thing. People are leaving Twitter in droves this week in favor of a social network called Bluesky.
As a political analyst, it’s not my job to decide what social network I want to be on. It’s my job to be wherever you are. With Bluesky exploding in popularity, Palmer Report now has an official Bluesky account. We’ve already gained more than 30,000 followers in just a few days, to give you an idea of how many people are moving to the platform. But there are still a lot more people on Twitter, and so Palmer Report is not leaving Twitter any time soon. Like I said, it’s your job to decide what platform you want to be on, and it’s my job to meet you there. We’ll see how the social media wars shake out. Remember, let’s keep fighting.
