The GOP’s jagged little pill
“It was never about babies.” This is a quote. I took it from — millions of people. “It was never about babies.” This is being said all over. It is being said on Twitter and Reddit. It is being said in homes and on television.
“It was never about the babies.” No, it wasn’t. It was about two things — fear and hate. When you mix fear and hate together, you have quite the noxious cocktail, don’t you?
It was about reduction. Reducing women to inanimate objects, stealing their dignity and their self-respect. THAT is what this has been about for Republican men. It was NEVER about babies, and what is playing out now all over our country proves it.
In Texas, all one has to do is hear Kate Cox — listen to her story and hear her words to know this to be true. All one has to do to realize the truth of it never being about babies is to look at Missouri, where lawmakers have proposed allowing homicide charges for women who have abortions.
It was never about the babies. In New Hampshire, as I wrote last week, Republicans have proposed a 15-day abortion ban. I could go on — and on — and on. Misogyny. Fear. Hatred. Control. That is what this is about. That is ALL this is about. And they’re addicted to it.
How do you know that, one may ask? After all — how could I, a mere writer, get inside the heads of all these republican men and accuse them of being addicted? It is because of the meaning of the word addiction: “The fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing or activity.”
Drugs and alcohol are not the only things that trap people in addiction. One of those things is toxic behavior. When someone is addicted to something, it controls them. It often leads them on a downward spiral, where the person who is addicted loses so much, sometimes everything.
The GOP is addicted. They’re addicted to control, to taking away control from women. It has ruined them. They have lost everything. They have lost all respectability. They have lost their ability to win elections. Time and time again, they lose.
It is because they cannot contain themselves. They cannot stop their worse angels from howling at their brains — more, more, more senseless laws, more cruel punishment. They have little control. Even winning elections — doing their jobs — are now second to this — this — this VOICE inside them. The voice of addiction.
So yes, the Men (and a few women) of the GOP are addicts hooked on the buzz of stealing women’s dignity. It has not happened because WE have not let it. Every time there is an election, we show up and win.
The control these Republicans desire has been soundly rejected. And still, that does not satiate their appetites for doing even more damage. THAT is addiction. That is the GOP’s jagged little pill, one that consumes them, allowing us to win again and again — and again.
