As the final votes are being counted, yet another Democrat has pulled ahead in Orange County, California – a part of the country that was once reliably Republican but has gradually turned Democratic. Adam Gray, a House candidate for California’s 13th, has recently grown his lead with just over 200 votes over Rep. John Duarte.

Yes, Republicans still have the House, but Democrats have made slight gains over where they were in 2022, and with a number of House Republicans resigning from their seats to join the incoming Trump administration, Mike Johnson is very limited on how many Republican defections he can have on the floor at any given time if the GOP wants to pass anything at all.

It makes his life that much harder once Donald Trump takes control, as the whole country has already witnessed the uncontrollable clown car the House GOP already is. Now, there’s going to be even less of them – and not a few of them are going to want to be associated with the deeply unpopular issues associated with the party’s platform such as repealing the Affordable Care Act or CHIPS – two things Johnson has already put firmly on the chopping block. The more chaotic the GOP looks on the House and Senate floor, the much worse their infighting is going to get – and it’s already terrible. This is why we need to set our sites on special elections in 2025 and the midterms in 2026 after the holidays are over.
