The Democrats’ secret weapon
For much of the time that I’ve been alive, Republicans have long acted like they have a monopoly on religion – particularly Christianity – a feature that has allowed them to dominate the much sought after evangelical vote. Over the last decade, it’s become clear that they want to turn the US into a theocracy, and they’re not even particularly shy about it anymore, as the Project 2025 outline lays clear. We’re seeing it bubble to the surface with right-wingers spending Easter ranting about how President Biden somehow canceled the holiday, even though he had guests for Easter dinner and the traditional Easter Egg rolling contest on Monday on the White House lawn.
Fortunately, the Democrats have U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia, a devout Baptist minister who was unafraid to call the GOP out on their despicable behavior – particularly House Speaker Mike Johnson: “Apparently, the speaker finds trans people abhorrent and I think he ought to think about that the fact of the matter is as you said, March 31st has been a day to lift up transgender people who endure violence and bigotry Easter, the date changes…This is just one more instance of folks who have who do not know how to lead us trying to divide us. And this is the opposite of the Christian faith.”
As an actual person of faith, Warnock called out the Republicans’ latest effort at the culture war for what it was – one that was fairly poorly choreographed and ultimately rang hollow, as the party doing the oppressing tried desperately to cast themselves as the victim. A holiday weekend where Republicans desperately tried to find something to politically convenience themselves for 24 hours shows exactly why they can’t be trusted with power for four years. Let’s vote them out on Nov 5.
