The coming collapse

The saying “slow and steady wins the race” is a cliché because it’s true. When you take things at breakneck speed, you tend to make mistakes or set yourself up for failure. Shortly after Donald Trump began issuing executive orders, it became clear that he wasn’t giving these things very much thought. That is beginning to show. The litigators left inside the DOJ are finding themselves unprepared to defend Trump’s reckless moves, and many have departed rather than trying to defend things they know aren’t right. U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper (appointed by President Barack Obama) asked the attorney for the Trump administration whether they were required to give advance notice to the people they’ve been laying off. The prosecutor, Abhishek Kambli, responded: “Your honor, I don’t have the answer to that precise question off the top of my head.” Judge Cooper responded: “OK, but that strikes me as a pretty important question.” You think? Kambli is not the only attorney who has run across questions to which he didn’t know the answer. That’s because Donald Trump initiated all these actions with absolutely no thought. No thought of consequences, no thought of the people he was uprooting, and absolutely no thought of the law.

It is becoming clear that Trump’s second foray into public office is an unmitigated disaster. While I had been thinking and wondering how all this would turn out, James Carville gave the answer I had been trying to find. The Hill reported on a conversation Carville had with Dan Abrams of Mediate. Carville believes that the Trump administration cannot go on as it has and will collapse within 30 days. Now, I’m not ready to be that specific, but I honestly cannot see how this is going to continue. Already, people who voted for Trump are very unhappy with him. The rest of us were unhappy that he won, so that’s neither here nor there. Carville, however, had some things to say: “It’s collapsing right now. We’re in the midst of a collapse. This is the lowest approval, not even close, that any president has ever had at a comparable time.”

Sure enough, the Daily Digest reported that Trump’s popularity is declining. They call it “a historic decline in approval ratings.” According to that outlet, Trump has become the second-most unpopular president in modern history, trailing only himself in his first term. Keep in mind that his approval rating has never been that high. He entered office with 7+ points, with 49% approving and 41% disapproving. Further, Trump entered office with a 50% approval rating from young people. He now stands at 39% with that same group. That’s not all. A recent Harvard poll shows Trump falling from 53% to 39% in the last few weeks. With the policies Trump is implementing those numbers won’t be changing anytime soon, unless they go even lower.

Appearing on “Hannity” last week, Carville made these same predictions. He said: “Democrats don’t need to be aggressive in combating Trump.” He believes they should “play possum.” Democrats have no obligation to Trump nor to Republicans overall. They should not help them get anything passed.
