The California Governor recall race is already descending into a total farce
One of the more curious questions right now is why the Republican Party of California is bothering to force a recall election against Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, when he’s overwhelmingly likely to win. Or do they really think they can somehow win? Are they just bored? Or is something else going on?
We may be getting that answer already. In the days since it became clear that the recall election is indeed going to happen, Caitlyn Jenner has officially announced her candidacy, and Randy Quaid has announced that he’s also considering running. If Jenner is a right wing wacko in her own right, she’s positively reasonable in comparison to Quaid. Neither of them has any chance of winning – literally zero – if they end up being the Republican nominee running against Newsom.
So now we wait to see what the California Republican Party establishment does. If they bankroll some more serious candidate – perhaps a tech industry CEO or respected actor who is ready to come out of the closet as a “friendly” Republican – then we can conclude that the party is indeed trying to find a path to a long shot win.
But if the California Republican Party sits back and allows zero-chance loons like Jenner and Quaid to be its main candidates, then we’ll know that the party isn’t even trying to win the recall election, and is instead merely forcing it to happen so that pro-Trump loons will donate to the California GOP while thinking they’re supporting Jenner or Quaid. Then the California GOP can use that money in down ticket races in the more conservative regions of California.
We’ll see what the party’s next move is. But if the California GOP is indeed looking to run a semi-serious candidate for Governor, it’s already clear that it’ll have to worry about the likes of Jenner, Quaid, and other attention-seeking loons siphoning off already-insufficient Republican votes.
