The surest sign yet that Donald Trump won’t survive this
Donald Trump woke up this morning and called for Democratic Congressman Adam Schiff to be arrested for “treason.” Funny enough, Schiff wasn’t arrested today. Trump keeps making toothless threats that just end up getting mocked, but that’s not the reason we know he won’t survive this.
Instead, it’s what Donald Trump didn’t tweet today. Last night, after Trump tweeted his support for a “Civil War” if he’s impeached and removed, Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger responded by saying “This is beyond repugnant.” Kinzinger represents an overwhelmingly pro-Trump district, and in the old days Trump would have fired back at Kinzinger in vicious fashion, in the hope of ending the guy’s career.
But Donald Trump didn’t say a word today about Adam Kinzinger’s takedown of him. One of Trump’s own House Republicans fell wildly out of line, and Trump didn’t bother to try to teach him a lesson or make an example out of him.
We all know why: Donald Trump is now far too weak and vulnerable to dare attack any of the House Republicans who will soon be having to decide how to vote on articles of impeachment. If Trump drives them away, they’ll find it easier to throw him under the bus if they end up concluding that it’s what’s selfishly best for their own careers.
The thing is, Donald Trump’s silence today sent a message loudly and clearly. House Republicans are now free to publicly attack and condemn Trump in any way they choose, and there will be no pushback. Trump has signaled that he’s now far too crippled to take on any folks on his own side who are ready to help finish him off – and that’s the surest sign yet that Donald Trump won’t survive this.
