Donald Trump’s strangely silent 24 hours are leading up to something big
Since the redacted Mueller report was released, and in particular since it became clear that House Democrats are marching in the direction of impeachment, Donald Trump has become even more of a frantic and deranged tweet machine than ever. This Saturday, traditionally his quietest day of the week, Trump posted fifteen tweets and retweets. Then came today, and… nothing.
Apart from a Fox News interview announcement early on Sunday morning, followed by a couple Shinzo Abe retweets, Donald Trump has been silent on Twitter all day. In fact he hasn’t really said anything on social media in twenty-four hours. This is rare for him, and it usually turns out that something particularly awful for him has temporarily scared him into silence. So what’s really going on here? There is one big clue, based on something that was on Trump’s schedule on Sunday.
Donald Trump played a round of golf on Sunday, which is – pardon the phrase – par for the course. But here’s the kicker: according to CNN’s Manu Raju, Trump played golf with Lindsey Graham and Rand Paul. These are the two Republican Senators who notoriously hated him, until they both suddenly decided last year to cartoonishly become his best friends and biggest allies. It raised questions about what Trump might be holding over them – particularly considering that Rand Paul suddenly became pro-Russia just as he became pro-Trump.
We don’t know what Donald Trump discussed with Lindsey Graham and Rand Paul while Trump was cheating at golf today. But we do know that Trump’s Attorney General William Barr is set to testify about his attempted coverup of the Mueller report before the Senate Judiciary Committee this Wednesday, and Graham is now the chairman of that committee. Hmm, do you think that perhaps Barr’s testimony came up during their golf game?
Then there’s this bizarre story where Republican politicians from Florida are suddenly coming very close to admitting that Russian hackers rigged Florida in Donald Trump’s favor in the 2016 election, and no one knows why they’re admitting it. Considering the questions about how Rand Paul became such a Russian puppet, and the questions how Trump managed to get Paul and Graham to become his puppets, just maybe the Florida-Russia scandal came up.
In any case, whatever was going on behind the scenes today, it’s spooked Donald Trump – for now at least – into cautious silence. We suspect Trump will erupt again tomorrow morning, and perhaps tip off what’s been weighing on his mind today. One way or the other, something is up.
