Right now Mitch McConnell is trying help Liz Cheney wrest control of the Republican Party away from Kevin McCarthy and Marjorie Taylor Greene, in what has devolved into the kind of sub-reality show where the contestants are calling each other “loony” and a “cancer.” Remarkably, this is really happening.

These are the strange yet inevitable days in which the Republican Party, having morphed into little more than a Donald Trump real estate scam, and having no idea what to do now that Trump has been fully neutered, is collapsing in on itself. There are those savvy villains like McConnell and Cheney who want to take the party back to their calculated big money grifting days. Then there are those buffoons like McCarthy and Greene who were elevated during the Trump era because they were buffoons, who are now in completely over their heads – and they’re getting in the way of the savvy villains.

Meanwhile President Joe Biden is enjoying a high approval rating while pushing through one reform after another, and Senate Democrats are in position to pass whatever legislation they want. The contrast between the current fates of the Democratic and Republican Parties couldn’t be any more striking. And yet the downfall of Trump seemingly made this fate inevitable. Now it’s up to the Democrats to keep plugging away at progress while the GOP eats itself.
