When Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro were both sentenced to four months in prison for the misdemeanor conviction of contempt of Congress, they each argued to their trial judge that they shouldn’t have to go to prison while appealing, due to the short nature of their sentence. Bannon got lucky in that the judge randomly assigned to his trial agreed with that argument. Navarro was unlucky in that the judge randomly assigned to his trial didn’t buy that argument, and is sending him to prison this upcoming week.

Yet there are those who are convinced that Bannon managed to avoid prison because he has magical powers for “getting away with it all.” Nevermind that if the judge assignments had randomly gone the other way, Bannon would be reporting to prison this week and Navarro would be remaining free.

Meanwhile, Bannon is facing another criminal trial later this year on state level charges in New York that can’t be pardoned by any President. If Bannon is convicted in that trial, he’s looking at a several year prison sentence for fraud. No judge is going to allow Bannon to remain out of prison while appealing that serious of a sentence. In other words, Bannon is about to rot in prison for several years.

So it’s not surprising that Bannon is now talking about how other right wing activists should be prepared to go to prison for what they believe in:

.
In other words, Steve Bannon knows he’s going to prison, and he’s trying to preemptively spin it as being some kind of heroic thing. No actually, Bannon is going to prison because he stole a lot of money. By the way, Bannon is also going to federal prison on his contempt charge once he loses his appeal. In that instance he’s going to prison because he was too stupid to figure out how to contest his congressional subpoena.

It’s all a good reminder that in spite of all the magical powers that both sides like to assign to Steve Bannon, he is in fact quite the idiot. He consistently talks a big game. But when it comes down to it, he’s really just a sloppy two-bit hack who keeps digging himself deeper holes, and knows he’s on his way to prison.
