Remember back when Rudy Giuliani burst onto the scene with a new legal defense for Donald Trump that was so awful, it either had to be some kind of secret evil genius ruse, or a just plain disaster? It’s turned out to very much be the latter, as Giuliani has had to walk back one bit of damaging nonsensical rambling after another. Now it’s gotten so bad that, even as he continues to run his mouth, Trump isn’t even talking to him.

Rudy now admits that, despite supposedly being in charge of Trump’s legal team, the last time he got to speak with Trump was a “couple weeks ago.” No, really. Giuliani just admitted as much during a largely incoherent interview with BuzzFeed, which makes clear that no one is running Trump’s legal team.

At this point Donald Trump’s legal team consists of Rudy Giuliani, who hasn’t heard from Trump in weeks, newcomer Emmet Flood, who right now is probably wishing he’d never gotten out of bed, and Jay Sekulow, who is just sort of there. Trump’s legal defense pretty much just consists of Trump yelling things on Twitter at random, and hoping he gets lucky.

What stands out as so bizarre here is that, even though Donald Trump got frustrated with Rudy Giuliani and cut off communication with him two weeks ago, he still hasn’t bothered to fire Rudy, or even to muzzle him. Giuliani is just going to one media outlet after another, claiming to be representing Trump, a client with whom he’s apparently no longer on speaking terms. This is all going south faster than even we would have expected – and Rudy is so far gone, he’s now flat out admitting that he no longer has any direct contact with his client.
