Donald Trump sounds totally defeated

During his past several press conferences, Donald Trump has come across as being in poor health, nervous, and almost frantic about how badly his presidency is collapsing. But he’s also come across as combative, sarcastic, and angry. Today, however, was something different entirely: he sounded defeated.

Maybe it’s finally sunk in for Donald Trump that his dishonest, psychotic, failed handling of the coronavirus crisis is going to cost him his reelection bid. Or maybe someone gave him a heads up that CNN had decided not to put today’s press conference on the air until Trump was finished speaking and the doctors took the stage. Or maybe Trump just doesn’t want to be doing these briefings anymore, after Yamiche Alcindor and Jim Acosta gave him such a strong taste of his own medicine yesterday.

Whatever the reason, Donald Trump sounded like he truly didn’t want to be up there today. Even when it got to the Q&A session and he periodically jumped in, it was like he was barely there. The guy is clearly physically unwell. But this feels like something more. Trump isn’t even trying to pretend he wants to be up there today.
