Sounding the alarm about the midterms
Even now that we’re in the final month and it’s finally starting to get some serious mainstream media attention, I’m not sure everyone fully realizes what all hinges on the midterms.
If we lose the House majority, we won’t be able to pass any meaningful legislation for the next two years. Republicans will control the House committees, and will hold nonstop hearings about fake scandals. Biden will likely be impeached; he won’t be removed, but it’ll nonetheless be a tumultuous fiasco.
If we lose the Senate majority, we won’t be able to confirm any more judges โ not even any Supreme Court vacancies that might occur.
If we manage to keep the House majority and expand the Senate majority to 52 seats, none of the bad things listed above will happen. Instead we’ll get to pass just about any legislation we want, including codifying Roe and other fundamental rights. It’ll be the most progressive era of our lifetime.
This is why the 2022 election is every bit as crucial to the fate of our nation as the 2020 election was. The saving grace in 2020 was that Biden was always well ahead and always had about a 90% chance of winning โ so when far too many people on our side wasted the 2020 election cycle yelling “we’re gonna lose” instead of putting in the work to try to win, it wasn’t as much of a liability. But our odds of winning the House and Senate are 50-50 at best. We can’t afford for the “we’re gonna lose” crew to sit this one out. We need all hands on deck. Everything is on the line. Let’s spent this final month donating, phone banking, volunteering remotely, canvassing, sending postcards, and whatever else it takes for Democrats in competitive House and Senate races. We can win this โ but only if you set side the idle fretting and roll up your sleeves.
