If one peers into her eyes, one would see, in their depths, the glow of emeralds — emeralds that reflected the beauty of the outer banks. Mountains shape her glow — Blue Ridge mountains that make her one of this country’s most beautiful states.

She is lovely and vibrant, and her name is Carolina. North Carolina, to be exact — the tar-heel state. North Carolina is a purple state, not red. It’s a state at a crossroads right now. That is because the University of North Carolina is under attack from Republicans.

North Carolina is a state known for their higher education. Places like the “Triangle” are well-known for their creativity and innovation present in their wonderful schools. And right now, republicans are attempting to eliminate tenor for community college facilities.

This is House Bill 715. With this legislation, tenure would be eliminated for faculty hired after July 1st, 2024. Irene Mulbry is national president of the American Association of University Professors and she calls this bill “the most sweeping move yet” to destroy tenured staff. “This is the most egregious I’ve seen,” she said.”

Eliminating tenure for new hires. This is the latest Republican goal –at least in North Carolina though it is happening in other places too. Higher education is under attack, readers. This article is a warning — a call to activism.

Please be aware because the mainstream media isn’t covering this story, much. They NEED to. We must tweet about it and talk about it and make people aware. Education has been under attack from republicans for years, but this introduces a new wrinkle. And one shouldn’t be surprised. The GOP has long shown its disdain for teachers and its indifference to them.

Democrats, on the other hand, support and celebrate teachers. This story needs to be told because the GOP will keep chipping away at teachers’; rights, and EVERYONE needs to know this. North Carolinians need to know this. The country must know that this is yet another reason to vote blue at the ballot box.
